Many of us will know from personal experience that the route to hepatitis C diagnosis can be long. A variety of factors create barriers to getting tested and seeking treatment. Confusion about routes of transmission leads to a lack of understanding that we have been at risk. Hepatitis C is often symptomless for decades and we simply don’t realise we may have it. A lack of awareness of hepatitis C from GPs may lead to investigations of other causes and conditions when we present with symptoms like fatigue, depression and digestive problems.

The Wales Infected Blood Support Scheme (WIBSS) is looking for patient representatives to sit on its Appeals Panel. WIBSS was established in October 2017, to provide support to people who have been infected with hepatitis C and/or HIV following treatment with NHS blood, blood products or tissue. Taking over from the previous UK schemes (Eileen Trust, Macfarlane Trust, MFET Ltd, Skipton Fund and Caxton Foundation), WIBSS aims to provide both a streamlined financial payment service and personalised support for Welsh beneficiaries.

Baroness Randerson, co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Liver Health, today (9th July) tabled a question in the House of Lords on the government's strategy for eliminating hepatitis C.  Lord O’Shaughnessy, responding on behalf of the government, confirmed that the government currently has no plans to release an elimination strategy, but emphasised that they are working closely with the NHS towards an ambition of eliminating hepatitis C by 2025, five years ahead of the World Health Organization (WHO) target.

The Terms of Reference for the Infected Blood Inquiry were published on Monday 2nd July, with the UK Government and devolved institutions accepting the terms recommended by the Inquiry Chair, Sir Brian Langstaff, without amendment.

MPs today (12th June) held a debate in Westminster Hall on eliminating hepatitis C, led by Sir David Amess MP (pictured). The debate was secured following the publication of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Liver Health's 'Eliminating Hepatitis C in England' report in March of this year, which The Hepatitis C Trust supported as the secretariat for the group.

The Infected Blood Inquiry has confirmed that recommendations regarding the inquiry's terms of reference will be made to the Cabinet Office shortly, and the inquiry expects to begin gathering evidence in June.
